What role does HDF5 play in Open Science? - Gerd Heber on Call the Doctor 2/11/25
Despite predating it, HDF5 has impacted and significantly contributed to Open Science. Overall, HDF5’s open-source model, robust technical capabilities, and commitment to interoperability make it a foundational tool for researchers looking to share, preserve, and analyze data transparently and reproducibly, which positions HDF5 as a critical enabler of Open Science practices, where the free exchange of data is key to accelerating scientific discovery.
Is this “as good as it gets?” Open Science is fundamentally networked science, and information unavailable on the network can only have a limited impact. I expect the next wave of HDF5 innovation in networked data. Specifically, I believe that “connecting” HDF5 data to knowledge graphs is a last-mile problem we should address urgently, and we don’t need new technology to solve it.
Tune in to hear and talk back to Gerd Heber on Tuesday’s Call the Doctor. (As always, your HDF questions are welcome!)
