Happy Friday, everybody! You might disagree, but at The HDF Group, we care deeply about documentation. One of our biggest mistakes was departing from a single-entry support site and fragmenting it into a bazillion DNS subdomains. You probably needed 5+ bookmarks in your browser to keep tabs on this maze. Last night, we retired the old support site and replaced it with what will eventually mature into a seamless one-stop experience.

I say “mature” because, in its current form, it is far from perfect. For example, it cobbles together different documentation silos, and there is not yet a site-wide search function. But it is finally on an evolutionary path. Similar to when we started treating docs like code, the site is under version control, and I want to invite you to help us improve it. Please create an issue or send us a PR; the whole community will be better off!

If you prefer the old site’s charm, it’s still there! Check out https://support.hdfgroup.org/archive/support/index.html or follow the Archive link in the sidebar, and enjoy the sound of vinyl!

We have made another positive step forward in our documentation. When citing information from our documentation, you can now use the “latest” tag in the URL to always point to the latest released version of the documentation. For example:

https://support.hdfgroup.org/documentation/hdf5/latest/

When using this URL, you will notice that it is shorter than referencing version-specific documentation. Using the “latest” URL path ensures that future visitors will always be directed to the most recent version of the page. This is a helpful way to keep cited information up-to-date and easily accessible without constantly revising links.
