The HDF5 SHINES project invites the HDF5 community to a half-day workshop focused on strengthening the safety, security, and privacy of the HDF5 open-source ecosystem.
Date: Wednesday, August 12, 2026
Time: 1:00–4:30 p.m. Pacific Time
Location: San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC San Diego
Remote participation: Available via Zoom
Workshop information: https://ssdbm.org/2026/workshop-safe-ose
HDF5 is foundational infrastructure for scientific, engineering, government, and industrial data workflows. Its role as a long-lived, self-describing data container makes trust in the HDF5 library, file format, extensions, tools, packaging, and software supply chain increasingly important.
The workshop program will include:
- A keynote by Tracy Ragan of DeployHub: “Open Source Security Is Scientific Data Infrastructure Security”
- HDF5 security, safety, and privacy
- HDF5 software-supply-chain risks
- A machine-readable HDF5 file-format specification
- HDF5 audit findings and mitigation priorities
- An open community discussion
The workshop is intended for HDF5 developers, users, integrators, package maintainers, security practitioners, data managers, and researchers. We particularly encourage participation from those who rely on HDF5 in HPC, cloud, AI/ML, archival, regulated, or mission-critical environments.
Please join us to share your concerns, use cases, and priorities, and to help identify practical paths toward more secure-by-default HDF5 software and workflows.
Registration will open soon. Please monitor the workshop page for registration details and program updates.
