You may check an example from hdfeos.org. We posted many examples on how to use matlab to read NASA HDF and HDF-EOS files. You may check http://hdfeos.org/zoo/LaRC/TES_L3_CH4_SurfacePressure.m and check the file under ftp://ftp.hdfgroup.uiuc.edu/pub/outgoing/NASAHDF/TES-Aura_L3-CH4_r0000010410_F01_07.he5.
