I'm finally biting the bullet on rebuilding the
HDF5 Java bindings, so that I can try to debug
the issue I have been having with address overflows
deep in the HDF5 library. However, hdf-java configure
is failing at line 4428. It seems to be insisting
on something related to "HDF 4 to 5", a capability
I have no interest in and have tried to disable
along with HDF4 through use of the --without-h4toh5
flag, but it appears to be ignoring that setting
and ultimately gives me:
"configure: error: : not writable"
which is not a helpful error message. I'm building
this for Centos, if that matters. What should I be
specifying to configure, if all I want to build
are the HDF5 Java bindings?
(This is a backup in case I am unable to determine
how to rebuild the JHDF5 native jars, or if that
process requires hdf-java to be built first.)

make sure that your installation directory (prefix =...) exists and is writable.
