help understanding the use of object references

Hi, I'm having trouble understanding the utility of object references (other
than references to dataset hyperslabs). With soft and hard links, and
external softlinks, under what circumstances would an object reference be
better? Can you reference meta data (object attributes)? Can you use these
references as metadata?

The tutorial and documentation on the hdf website seems to do a good job
explaining how to create and work with object references, but I don't
understand their utility. Also I am new to the forums, and my apologies if
this has already been covered, I did some searching (google and nabble) but
couldn't find an answer.

You can't reference metadata, but you can use references as metadata, which is one advantage over links. I use this to indicate dependencies between datasets, by adding reference attributes. You can also store references in data sets, e.g. have an array of references.
