i cannot find any switches that the software can use, i want to install it silently and maybe setup a default directory.

Could you please try “HDFView-<version>.exe -q”? <version> is whatever the version of HDFView you are using, i.e., something like this “HDFView-3.3.2.exe -q”.
Tried -q -s /silent /unattended /s /q /quiet -quiet and with –
-? -help /? /help
nothing works
What about using the AppImage, such as, HDFView-3.3.2App-Linux-x86_64.tar.gz from Release v3.3.2 · HDFGroup/hdfview · GitHub? You can just copy the AppImage everywhere you want and no installation needed. You probably want to provide a script that sets up paths and file associations.
