Hdfview hdf5 encoding status?

Hello,

I'd like to use hdf5 as the central data format of a new project.
However, some files can be created by people (not machine), and french
people like accented charecters...

I use :
- a Madriva 2007 Linux box ($LANG=fr_FR.UTF-8) with
   - hdfview 2.4
   - hdf5 1.8.2
   - fcc & gfortran 4.1.1
- Windows XP
   - hdfview 2.4

I 've tried hdfview and I've noted :

- hdfview supports accented characters in group / dataSet names.
-> On Linux, C programs can read and print the value in the console
generated with Linux&windows hdfview.

- For string dataSets :
    - On Linux, hdfview can write accented characters in datasets but
can't reopen the dataset after the file is closed/reoponed:-(. hdfview
throws a "java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of
range: 10".
          -> Is it a known bug ?
-> My fortran program can read the dataset value and print
correctly the value in the console.
    - On windows, hdfview can write and can reopen the dataset.
-> My fortran/C program (executed on Linux) can't print
correctly the value in the console.

Is there any policy to insure a correct handling of character encoding
between :
- hdfview
- Unix
        java / C / fortran
- Windows
       java / C / fortran

Is there any plan to release hdfview built with hdf5 1.8 ?

Thanks a lot,

Cyril Giraudon.

Cyril,

Is there any plan to release hdfview built with hdf5 1.8 ?

We plan to release Java products including hdfview based on hdf5 1.8.2 and HDF4.2r4 in two weeks. The new release will not support new 1.8 features in Java APIs, but HDFView will be able to read files created by 1.8 libraries.
