Hdfview gui not working

I’m a sysadmin who’s been asked to look into a problem with hdfview installed on an Ubuntu 14 server. We’ve actually got two servers configured identically (theoretically), same hardware, same software packages. Hdfview 2.9-1 was installed from the Ubuntu repository.

On one server, hdfview works just fine, but on the other server when hdfview is started, a window pops up, but the panels in the main window are ridiculously the wrong size, and there’s no text or menus. I’ve attached a screenshot of the window.

I’ve checked that the same versions of hdfview are installed on both systems, and also verified the both systems have the same versions for all the dependencies of hdfview.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong, or how I might go about solving this?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

Hello John,

HDFView 2.9 is fairly old, so it is hard to say for sure what the issue is.

Are you interested in trying a pre-release version of HDFView 3.0? Please contact the HDF Helpdesk (help@hdfgroup.org) if you would like to try it. We expect HDFView 3.0 to be released later in the summer.
