HDF5 + <IDL-7.1 on MacOSX

Hi,
we are extensively using HDF5-1.8.x in combination with IDL for
scientific visualization purposes. As you may know it's still
problematic to properly read hdf files in IDL with Dynamically Loadable
Modules provided by ITTVis. So far we've been working mostly on linux
machines and DLM found at:
ftp://ftp.hdfgroup.uiuc.edu/pub/outgoing/hdf5/snapshots/idl/
did a great job and worked flawlessly.
However, many of our users have migrated to MacOSX recently and they are
no longer able to work with HDF5 and IDL.
Therefore I would like to ask for:
1) precompiled DLMs for MacOSX, or even better
2) the source of those DLMs so I could provide users with DLM on OS of
their choice.
Thank you in adavance and
best regards,

Hi Kacper,

I do not know this. Could you explain? We have resolved our problems by using IDL 7.06 or later. What kind of problems do you encounter?

Thanks,

I know that most of the issues are solved in newer versions of IDL.
However, I cannot force users to upgrade IDL if it could be done by
simple exchange of HDF5 DLMs. It worked greatly so far, but only on linux.
Encountered problems:
  1) inability to read compressed datasets created by HDF5-1.8.x
  2) random SegFaults

What kind of compression was used? If it is n-bit or scale-offset, then it is available in 1.8.* only and not in 1.6.*. My understanding is that IDL 7.1 still uses 1.6.7. Have you contacted IDL and asked them to support 1.8.*?

The binaries you used from our Web site are part of the pilot project to see how much work it will be for us and ITTVis to address IDL being "behind" and using old buggy versions of HDF5, and to help them to move to 1.8.*. It was not intended to replace official IDL distribution. Wouldn't your users need new licenses if they move from Linux to Mac? (plus IDL with 1.8.*).
