H5repack, what is it good for? Aleksandar Jelenak on Call the Doctor 10/21/25
H5repack is a command-line tool that is typically available when the HDF5 library is installed. It can perform various modifications to an HDF5 file specified using its command arguments, such as altering chunk shapes or applying data compression to specific datasets. Although it has been available for a long time (at least since version 1.8.0), it has recently gained renewed interest as a tool for cloud optimizing HDF5 or netCDF-4 files after their generation. However, for certain files and their processing tasks, h5repack does not demonstrate satisfactory performance, raising the question of whether it was ever intended to serve as the workhorse for modifying HDF5 files after their creation. Aleksandar will discuss a few methods he recently employed to gather performance information from h5repack. Additional information is necessary to better comprehend whether there is any potential for improving h5repack’s performance.
