Is it possible to replay a time series plot in HDF?

You might try looking at pytables. I haven't yet seen anyone put it all together, but I know pytables has pretty good HDF support, and python has some fairly good graphing API, based on some demos I've seen... Sorry I can't be of any more help than that 
It might work for your movie stuff too.
