We had another sub for Call the Doctor this past Tuesday. Scot Breitenfeld stepped in with a presentation on a really key foundational topic, the HDF5 data model and how to structure your data to achieve your goals. Highly recommend for anyone getting started in HDF5 or struggling with some performance concerns.
Call the Doctor is every Tuesday at 1pm central, although it will be held next week (10/12) in conjunction with the HDF5 Users Group (register here) then after that back to it’s own zoom meeting (register here).
Don’t forget, Call the Doctor is happening tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m. central with Gerd Heber @gheber) as our regular host.

@gheber frequently addresses recent forum posts to provide a little more insight. Bring your question to the session, or put it in this google doc to be addressed. You can also catch up on past sessions with this youtube playlist.
Call the Doctor will be tomorrow (Tuesday 3/15) at 1:00 p.m. central with Gerd Heber (@gheber). We welcome any new questions you may have. Tomorrow’s planned content is to continue discussing HDF5 applications and clients in Cloud-based environments.
Register to join us or check out the last session on youtube.
The Call the Doctor session scheduled for Tuesday, May 3 has been cancelled as many staff members and associates of The HDF Group are busy with the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) annual meeting taking place this week.
Feel like you’re missing out on content? Check out the HDF5 VOL Status Report, or the slide deck prepared for the Parallel I/O with HDF5 and Performance Tuning Techniques presentation. And of course, don’t forget to register for the European HDF5 Users Group meeting, taking place in-person at ITER in France and remotely on Zoom.
Our next Call the Doctor session will be Tuesday, 9/6 at 1:00 pm. Central time (US/Canada). Over the next few weeks several different HDF Group employees will be taking over the hosting gig and presenting content and answering questions in their areas of expertise:
- Sept 6, 1:00 p.m. central - Scot Breitenfeld (@brtnfld) - HPC, Fortran
- Sept 13, 1:00 p.m. central - John Readey (@jreadey) - Cloud services, HSDS Principal Architect
- Sept 20, 1:00 p.m. central - Aleksandar Jelenak (@ajelenak) - Python, h5py contributor
As always, feel free to bring any HDF-related question (put it in the google doc ahead of time if you can), but this is a great chance to get in front of an engineer who may have the expertise you need for your project, for free.
